AKG Drum Set Session I 7-Piece Drum Microphone Set with Aluminum Carry Case

AKG Drum Set Session I 7-Piece Drum Microphone Set with Aluminum Carry Case

Seven microphones from AKG's Perception Live series, pre-matched and tuned to work together across a full drum kit — P2 kick drum mic, four P4 tom and snare dynamics, two P17 overhead condensers, H440 rim clamps, stand adapters, and a foam-padded aluminum carry case. Complete drum coverage, studio and stage ready, in one package.

About This Set

The AKG Drum Set Session I is a purpose-assembled drum microphone package built around one straightforward goal: give a drummer or recording engineer everything needed to mic a full kit, at a price that makes sense. Each of the seven microphones comes from AKG's Perception Live series — a line designed specifically for the demanding SPL requirements and physical abuse of live and studio drum work. The P2 kick drum mic uses a large-diaphragm dynamic capsule with a hum compensation coil and 157dB SPL ceiling to capture the full punch and sub-low weight of a bass drum without compression artifacts or electromagnetic noise. The four P4 dynamics cover snare and up to three rack or floor toms, with cardioid patterns and 152dB SPL handling that takes the hardest stick hits without breaking up. The two P17 small-diaphragm condensers serve as overheads, delivering the 20Hz–20kHz full-range condenser response that brings out cymbal shimmer, hat clarity, and the spatial impression of the kit as a whole. All seven microphones were voiced to complement each other — this is not a collection of unrelated utility mics thrown in a case. It is a system designed to produce a cohesive, balanced kit sound. H440 rim clamps are included for the P4s, stand adapters ship with all mics, and the whole set packs into a foam-lined briefcase-style aluminum carry case that makes transport and setup genuinely fast.

Key Highlights

  • 7 microphones in total — 1x P2 kick drum mic, 4x P4 tom and snare dynamics, 2x P17 small-diaphragm overhead condensers
  • All seven microphones are from AKG's Perception Live series, voiced to work together as a cohesive drum miking system
  • P2: large-diaphragm dynamic with hum compensation coil — 157dB max SPL, designed for kick drum, bass amp, and low-frequency instruments
  • P4: compact dynamic with integrated stand mount — 152dB max SPL, designed for toms, snare, and percussion
  • P17: small-diaphragm condenser, technically identical to the P170 — 20Hz–20kHz response, switchable -20dB pad for up to 155dB SPL, for overheads and acoustic instruments
  • The P17 is exclusive to this set and not sold as a standalone microphone — the P170 is the equivalent single-unit purchase
  • H440 drum rim adapters included for all four P4 microphones — mounts directly to drum shells, no separate boom stand needed for toms
  • Stand adapters and mic clips included for all seven microphones
  • All microphones feature durable all-metal casings, rugged spring steel grilles, and scratch-resistant finishes designed for the abuse of live performance and regular touring
  • Versatile beyond drums: P17s work on acoustic instruments, strings, and woodwinds; P2 works on bass amps, tuba, and trombone; P4s work on guitar amps and brass
  • Durable foam-padded aluminum briefcase-style carry case with custom foam cutouts for all seven microphones and accessories

The Three Microphones in This Set

Kick Drum AKG P2 — x1 Large-Diaphragm Dynamic / Cardioid
  • Max SPL: 157 dB — handles the full impact of a bass drum at close range without distortion
  • Hum compensation coil — rejects electromagnetic interference from nearby stage gear
  • Frequency response: 20 Hz – 16 kHz — tuned for low-frequency weight and punch
  • Integrated stand adapter — direct mount to any standard mic stand
  • All-metal housing, rugged grille cap, scratch-resistant finish
  • Also excellent on bass amp, trombone, and tuba
Toms and Snare AKG P4 — x4 Dynamic / Cardioid
  • Max SPL: 152 dB — handles hard stick hits at maximum force without distortion
  • Flat, natural frequency response tuned to reproduce the full character of the instrument without coloration
  • Cardioid polar pattern — focuses on the drum and rejects bleed from adjacent sources
  • Integrated stand adapter for conventional mic stand use
  • H440 rim clamp compatible for direct drum shell mounting
  • Also suited to guitar amps, brass, and percussion applications
Overheads AKG P17 — x2 Small-Diaphragm Condenser / Cardioid (P170 Equivalent)
  • Frequency response: 20 Hz – 20 kHz — full-range condenser capture for cymbals, hi-hat, and kit ambience
  • Switchable -20dB pad — extends headroom to 155 dB SPL for close-miking or loud overhead positions
  • Half-inch true condenser capsule — natural, spatially accurate stereo overhead image
  • All-metal body and rugged spring steel grille — built for live use as well as studio overhead work
  • Technically identical to the P170; P17 designation is exclusive to this set
  • Also excellent on acoustic guitar, strings, woodwinds, and piano

A System, Not a Collection

AKG designed these seven microphones to complement each other — the kick, toms, snare, and overheads are voiced to blend cohesively when mixed together rather than fighting each other in the low-mid and high-frequency ranges. The P2's low-end punch doesn't compete with the P4's midrange snap, and the P17's condenser overhead response ties the whole kit together spatially. The practical result is that the set works out of the case without extensive EQ surgery to make the sources play nicely together.

H440 Rim Clamps

The H440 clamps mount the P4 microphones directly to the drum rim, eliminating the need for four separate boom stands for tom miking. This matters practically: it reduces stage clutter, speeds up setup and teardown, and keeps the microphones locked in position relative to each drum head without the drift that can happen when boom stands are bumped or nudged during performance. Every P4 in the set ships with its own H440.

The Aluminum Case

The briefcase-style aluminum carry case is not decorative — it is a functional road case with foam cutouts that hold all seven microphones and accessories in place during transport. A set this complete, packed this neatly, arriving at a gig or session in one reinforced case rather than a tangle of bags and pouches, is a genuine operational advantage for any drummer or engineer who moves gear regularly.

Great Fit For

  • Drummers recording their first full kit who want a complete, matched set of microphones without piecing together a system mic by mic
  • Home studio producers who need a full drum miking solution that produces a professional, mix-ready kit sound
  • Live sound engineers who need a compact, all-in-one drum mic package that travels well and sets up fast
  • Rehearsal studios and practice spaces outfitting a drum room with a permanent miking setup
  • Schools, churches, and small venues running a live drum kit through a PA or digital mixer
  • Engineers who need a reliable backup drum mic set to carry alongside a higher-end primary kit

Getting a full drum kit miked up and sounding good is one of the more satisfying things in recording — and having the right microphones in the right positions is most of the battle. The Session I makes that step accessible. Seven mics, designed to work together, packed in a case that actually protects them, at a price that makes the decision easy. If you have been putting off recording drums because building the mic setup felt complicated or expensive, this is the practical answer.
