How to Change a Marching Tenor Head
- Back the tension rods off evenly with a drum key until they are loose, then lift off the counterhoop and the old head.
- Wipe the bearing edge clean and check it for grit or burrs before the new head goes on.
- Center the new head on the shell, set the hoop over it, and thread every tension rod finger-tight so the head sits square.
- Tighten in a star pattern, a half turn at a time, until the head reaches playing tension, then tap beside each lug and even out the pitch lug to lug.
Care Tip: Since this head is built for high tension, bring it up gradually over a couple of tunings rather than cranking it straight to pitch in one pass — it lets the film and hoop settle evenly and helps the head hold its tuning longer.
