Turn this head over and you’ll find a damping ring bonded around the underside of the film — Evans calls it Sound Shaping Technology, and it is cut to a specific width for a 13" drum. It takes the edge overtones out of the way and leaves the note and the attack alone, which is why an EC2S sounds finished the moment you tune it up.
The film is two plies of 7 mil clear, giving you a shorter, weightier note than a single-ply head and the toughness to handle a heavy right hand. A 13" rack tom sits in a busy part of the frequency range, and this is the head that keeps it from ringing over the snare.

How to Fit and Tune This Head
- Release the tension rods in a star pattern until they’re loose, lift off the hoop, and check the bearing edge is clean and free of old residue.
- Lay the new head down, seat the hoop over it, and turn every rod down by hand until they all just meet resistance. Do not touch the key yet.
- Now work the key round in half turns, star pattern. Tap next to each rod and match those pitches to each other before you decide whether the drum overall is too high or too low.
- Push down hard in the middle to seat the film, then go round once more. Getting a fresh two-ply head to hold pitch takes this second pass.
Care Tip: If you’re only replacing one tom head, listen to the drum against its neighbours before you settle the tuning. A brand new head next to two worn ones will sound noticeably brighter and longer, and drummers often chase that by mistuning the new drum. Replacing the set together saves that headache entirely.
